Ingredients

  • 2 – 2 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large green bell pepper diced
  • 1/2 large red onion diced
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • Hot sauce I use Frank’s Red Hot
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 TBSP packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Corn starch
  • Buns for serving

Instructions

  • Brown the meat in a large, deep skillet over medium high heat. Salt and pepper to taste. Drain off any fat.
  • Add the green peppers and onions to the skillet. Stir and allow to cook for a couple of minutes.
  • Pour in water. Add ketchup, BBQ sauce and garlic. Stir to combine.
  • Next, add the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, a few dashes of hot sauce and a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
  • Cover and simmer over medium low heat for 20 – 25 minutes.
  • If the sauce isn’t as thick as you’d like, add corn starch. Start by adding a teaspoon at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Serve by spooning mixture onto buns.

Notes

If you find it too spicy, you can try adding a little bit of red wine vinegar.
If you don't have BBQ sauce, you can use all ketchup.
We like ours with shredded cheese on top.
